"I act and feel the way I do for a reason". Think about that. People act in predictable ways. You won't have a feeling come up out of nowhere with nothing behind it. You may not understand or know what it it, but there is reason behind it.
Picture yourself age 3 or 4. You're sitting on the floor coloring. You're coloring outside the lines like you do. Then an adult walks up and tells you to color in the lines. When you're developing, you're trying to develop autonomy. You're trying to find your place.
Early development is the process of learning about ourselves. Even criticism over coloring can be handled. Shame and doubt are normal experiences. They can be handled.
Trauma is different. Sexual trauma, physical trauma, and emotional trauma impact us differently. The rules change. Psychologically, you try and protect yourself from further harm.
When the threats leave but you are still responding to them, therapy can help. There's a reason you're reacting and feeling the way you are. It could be related to trauma that is no longer threatening you but you are still reacting to.
