Here's a technique to better understand who you are.
Throughout our life we have people who are champions of us. They'll tell us our positive attributes. You're thoughtful, you're smart, hard working, etc.
An important part of early development is in symbolic representation. Our ability to learn, and our language, is built on symbols. Our minds are adept at picking up on symbols. A ball represents fun, or motion like rolling or bouncing. Language is how we output symbols in our mind.
Even before we can talk, we understand symbols. We know what a father is like or a mother.
In therapy, Fred will ask you to remember back to your childhood. What was the thing, object, toy, movie star, super hero, etc that you spent most of your time with.
Ask your family members what that was for you and they'll tell you the things they knew you had a particular kinship with.
When you discover what the object was, start writing down words that describe that character. Next to all of those words, write down experiences where you emulated those words.
